What Is Foot Overpronation?

Pronation refers to the foot turning downward or inward as you walk or run. This is a normal component of a gait or walking pattern. In some people, however, the foot turns downward or inward too much, resulting in overpronation. This is a biomechanical problem that is particularly common among people with flat feet and can lead to foot and ankle problems such as plantar fasciitis and Achilles tendonitis. Runners and other athletes who have an overpronated gait are at an increased risk of foot and ankle injuries and often require specialized footwear or orthotics to help correct their gait and prevent injuries. Biomechanics in Podiatry

Do I Have Cuboid Syndrome?

The cuboid is a bone located in the midfoot region, along the outside edge of the foot. Injury to this bone can cause plenty of midfoot pain. The pain may be sharp and is usually felt along the outside of the foot, near the pinky toe. The pain may worsen with physical activity or when putting weight on the foot, and gets better with rest. Sometimes, the range of motion of your foot will also be affected. Additionally, you may notice redness, swelling, and tenderness. Cuboid syndrome can be diagnosed through a physical examination. Imaging studies such as X-rays may be ordered to rule out a fracture. If you are experiencing any foot pain, please seek the care of a podiatrist.

Cuboid syndrome, also known as cuboid subluxation, occurs when the joints and ligaments near the cuboid bone in the foot become torn. Cuboid syndrome is a common cause of lateral foot pain, which is pain on the outside of the foot. The condition may happen suddenly due to an ankle sprain, or it may develop slowly overtime from repetitive tension through the bone and surrounding structures.

Causes

The most common causes of cuboid syndrome include:

  • Injury – The most common cause of this ailment is an ankle sprain.
  • Repetitive Strain – Tension placed through the peroneus longus muscle from repetitive activities such as jumping and running may cause excessive traction on the bone causing it to sublux.
  • Altered Foot Biomechanics – Most people suffering from cuboid subluxation have flat feet.

Symptoms

A common symptom of cuboid syndrome is pain along the outside of the foot which can be felt in the ankle and toes. This pain may create walking difficulties and may cause those with the condition to walk with a limp.

Diagnosis

Diagnosis of cuboid syndrome is often difficult, and it is often misdiagnosed. X-rays, MRIs and CT scans often fail to properly show the cuboid subluxation. Although there isn’t a specific test used to diagnose cuboid syndrome, your podiatrist will usually check if pain is felt while pressing firmly on the cuboid bone of your foot.

Treatment

Just as the range of causes varies widely, so do treatments. Some more common treatments are ice therapy, rest, exercise, taping, and orthotics.

Too Much Standing Can Be Bad For You

Once it was thought that sitting down too often was bad for one’s health, and that it is far better to stand. However, prolonged standing can also be bad for your overall health, and particularly for the health of your lower limbs. Standing for long periods of time can lead to muscle soreness and fatigue, as well as lower limb swelling. If in addition to standing all day, you also wear poorly-fitted or uncomfortable shoes, stand still without walking or stretching, and rarely take breaks to sit down, you may be at an increased risk of various foot and ankle problems, such as plantar fasciitis and varicose veins. Working on Your Feet

Standing on your feet for long periods of time can cause stress and pain in your feet. Your whole body may experience change in terms of posture, back pain, bunions, callouses and or plantar warts. There are ways to avoid these conditions with proper foot care, smart choices and correct posture.

Positive Changes

Negative heeled shoe – Choosing this shoe type places the heel slightly lower than the ball of the foot. These are great for overall foot health. Find shoes that fit you correctly.

Go barefoot – Our feet were not designed to be enclosed for all hours of the day. Try to periodically expose your feet to air.

Eliminate Pain

Foot Exercises – Performing simple exercises, incorporating yoga and doing stretches are beneficial. This will allow increased blood flow to the area and muscles of the foot.

Achilles tendon – Stretching the foot out flat on the floor will relax the calf muscles and tendon. These exercises can be performed almost anywhere. Make sure you add these exercises to your daily regimen.

How Are Broken Ankles Treated?

A broken ankle can be complex—involving all three bones of the ankle (talus, fibula, and tibia)—or simple when just one of these bones breaks. You may be experiencing a broken ankle if you have pain, tenderness, swelling, or bruising in the area. In more severe breaks, your ankle may be misshapen or a bone may be protruding. The manner of treatment your podiatrist takes to heal your broken ankle depends on the complexity and nature of the break as well as where it occurs. They may be able to help treat your ankle by icing it, stabilizing it with a cast, splint, or boot, and by instructing you to keep weight off of it for a period of time to allow it to heal on its own. Broken Ankles
A broken ankle is experienced when a person fractures their tibia or fibula in the lower leg and ankle area. Both of these bones are attached at the bottom of the leg and combine to form what we know to be our ankle.

When a physician is referring to a break of the ankle, he or she is usually referring to a break in the area where the tibia and fibula are joined to create our ankle joint. Ankles are more prone to fractures because the ankle is an area that suffers a lot of pressure and stress. There are some obvious signs when a person experiences a fractured ankle, and the following symptoms may be present.

Symptoms of a Fractured Ankle

  • Excessive pain when the area is touched or when any pressure is placed on the ankle

What Is a Doppler Ultrasound?

A Doppler ultrasound is an imaging test that uses sound waves to visualize blood flow throughout the body. In podiatry, a Doppler ultrasound can be used to diagnose peripheral artery disease and other conditions that may affect blood flow in the feet and ankles. You may need to undergo this imaging test if you are experiencing the symptoms of poor circulation in your lower limbs, which include numbness, weakness, coldness, cramping, or skin discoloration. A Doppler ultrasound is painless and noninvasive, and there are no known risks. It usually takes between 30 minutes and one hour to complete. What Is Vascular Testing?

Vascular testing checks for how well blood circulation is in the veins and arteries. This is most often done to determine and treat a patient for peripheral artery disease (PAD), stroke, and aneurysms. If a patient has diabetes, a podiatrist may determine a vascular test to be prudent to check for poor blood circulation.

How Is it Conducted?

Most forms of vascular testing are non-invasive. Podiatrists will first conduct a visual inspection for any wounds, discoloration, and any abnormal signs prior to a vascular test.
